Lester Martin

Owner & General Manager

Lester grew up in greenhouses. He helped his parents at the family farm as well as at Martin‘s Home & Garden. He took over the business from his parents at the age of 28. His parents taught him the value of customer service, and he took those lessons to heart. Lester was voted to Greenhouse Product News’ Class of 2017 "40 under 40" as a mover and shaker in the horticulture industry. Lester enjoys spending time with his family and teaching the next Martin generation about the family business.

Katie Cantrell

Lead Merchandiser & Gift Shop Department Head

Katie began her dream job at Martin’s in October 2017. She came to us with a B.S. in Interior Design and years of different management and merchandising roles in the corporate retail world. The strict rule-bound nature of the corporate environment never felt quite “right” to Katie, who grew up in small town Manchester, TN, playing in the woods and rearranging her room every other week. The merchandising and buying role gives her the best of the retail experience where she gets to move outstanding plants around and make displays that customers love to shop, the only limitations are her own imagination! She aims to create a jaw dropping experience that inspires you to come in and stay a while and enjoy this small piece of paradise called Martin’s Home and Garden! “Believe in yourself, listen to your gut, and do what you love.”

Birchell Thomas

Hard Goods Department Head

Birchell joined our team in February 2017. When he was little, his mother gave him his own garden bed around the house in which he could plant whatever he wanted. Every year, he always made sure Dusty Miller was included! This is where his love of plants began. He came to Murfreesboro from Knoxville during his time as a market sales manager for Scotts Miracle Gro. He decided he wanted to work for a small, family-owned company and Martin’s was the perfect fit. Birchell is passionate about striving for success, and he loves watching the business grow – he is excited about contributing however he can to make that happen. Birchell is ready to supplement you with everything you need to have your own successful garden and help your plants grow!

Ruth Jose

Greenhouse Department Head & Cashier Manager

After graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in Public Relations, Ruth searched all over for a career she could pour her passion and heart into. She stumbled upon Martin’s in March 2017 and has been in love ever since! Currently she has 34 plants in her bedroom alone (16 of which are orchids), so you could say she likes her job just a little bit. As a boss, her employees say she is the perfect mix of Michael Scott and Leslie Knope. If she doesn’t have her hands in the dirt somewhere, you can likely find her somewhere on the map exploring a new country in search of the best food the world has to offer.

Jacqulyn Swanson

Lead Landscape Designer

The rustling of autumn leaves in the back field, the slight shift in temperature under the great Magnolia, the evening light dancing its ways through every grass blade, and the ever present smell of wildflowers – these are the reasons Jacqulyn wanted plants to be the medium in which she crafts. Nothing is more special than giving back to nature and creating your own little heaven. She enjoys creating gardens that spring forth life in all seasons. No plot of earth is too small to be insignificant. Whether it’s your sprawling dream garden or just a little curb appeal, Martin’s Home & Garden can make your landscape dreams come to life.

Susan Carter

Perennials Department Head

Susan Carter is our perennials plant department head. In this role, she leads a team providing all aspects of your perennial plant needs including ordering, receiving, and sales. Susan has five years and counting of experience in plant care and sales at Martin’s. Passionate about sharing beautiful plants and their possibilities for your garden, she looks forward to seeing you soon!

Jason Peace

Trees & Shrubs Department Head

Jason first fell in love with landscaping when he was a kid working in the gardens around the yard with his mom and grandmother. He received a B.S. of Horticulture from Morehead State University. Since then, he has worked in multiple areas of the green industry – he’s worked at a zoo, at several garden centers in Ohio, with landscapers, and at multiple production nurseries. Jason is looking forward to helping you fulfill all of your landscape needs!
